Improving animal welfare assessment in zoological parks requires the development of simple, rapid and effective data acquisition methods. Aimed primarily at zoos, SAWA (Scientific Animal Welfare Analysis) is an app that can be used on computers, tablets and smartphones, providing a continuous, objective and scientific assessment of animal welfare. The aim of continuous assessment is to be able to notice a change in the state of welfare at any time, so that we can react and optimise it. By using animal-based criteria, the state of welfare can be assessed more reliably than by using resource-based criteria (such as water quality criteria for marine mammals, for example).
SAWA is an innovative tool designed for caretakers and managers, providing a quick overview of the status of each selected indicator using a colour-coding system. This coding, based on the latest literature and studies, provides an objective analysis of welfare while enabling quick action to be taken.
